My name is Rathnam. I lived in a remote village. When I was 10 years old I lost my father. In my family, we had six members. When I was 21 years old I got leprosy. My older brother and younger sister all got affected with leprosy and also my mother. One night in the middle of the night the village people burned down our house, because of this and they made us to run away from that village. We got on a train without a ticket and moved to another area.
In Chennai, Tamil Nadu we stayed under the bridge as homeless and we started our lives as beggars. We would go for begging every day and whatever we got we would eat that day. Many times in the rain or the hot sun we did not have a place to stay. Our lives were very terrible. Because we did not have much food to eat during the rainy season my mother died of starvation. My younger sister had to start going for prostitution and this also helped us a little more to get enough to eat. This life went on for three years as we were begging living like this under the bridge. But one day my sister was not feeling well and she got affected by a disease, and she slowly died, even you could see her bones. My elder brother went on his own way. I was left alone and I came back again to my village and I was living homeless under a tree. My whole life I lived as a homeless person. Then I came here to live at the Promised Land Community in 2016. I am very happy to stay here.
