A Widow's Only Hope

Kathy comforting Bethiyammal shortly
after her husband's death.

One day, when we went to Seelapadi to have a Bible study, we immediately learned that a man had died.
A huge crowd formed around us, and then the widow, her children, and the mother of the deceased man came running to me. The widow and her mother-in-law fell at my feet, sobbing uncontrollably.

All I knew to do was to kneel down and embrace them and try my best to comfort them. It was a very humbling experience. Bethiyammal, the widow, is the mother of three children and this whole family had depended on her husband to provide for their needs. Now they are not only grieving for him, but they are scared about what will happen to them, because it is very hard for a woman who is considered low caste, such as Bethiyammal, to ever get a job good enough to provide for her whole family. We prayed for them, and tried to comfort them. We also gave this family some rice.

Bethiyammal is very happy to receive rice for her family. ICII is supporting her family with rice as often as possible.

We learned that their hut was destroyed by the flood and they had to stay crammed inside a relative's home.Later,
I asked Pastor Britto why the family came running to me that way. He told me that when someone is in mourning, they will run and fall down before someone they feel close to in hopes of receiving comfort from them. Even though I had not remembered meeting this family before, they knew that I was there sharing the love of Jesus. Pastor Britto and I were assured that her husband had gotten the chance to hear the Gospel, and had not gone into eternity without a chance to make a decision to follow Christ.

This is why it is so important that these people have been reached with the Gospel. We continued to minister the hope of Jesus to Bethiyammal and she also received Christ. Through our "Buy a Hut" project, we were able to build her family a hut. Bethiyammal shares: "When I was in trouble and desperation you comforted me. In my time of sorrow no one cared about me but you came and comforted me and gave me food and built the hut for me. I didn't have anybody but you are the only one who is helping my family and I give all my thanks to God and to you".
